Flowers of Peace

I got the second place winner in National Essay Writing Contest 2013 which was held by Duta Wacana Christian University, Yogyakarta and here is the essay.

God has made each of us unique and different. We all have different abilities, different talents, and different personalities. He placed us in a region. Then, we together with other people make a culture for that region. This is the origin of cultural differences. Culture covers many things, such as: traditions, traditional dances, traditional foods, traditional dress, traditional languages etc. Of course there are many regions in this world with different cultures, even in one region. For instance, in North Sumatera there are many Batak ethnic groups, such as Batak Karo, Batak Toba, Batak Mandailing etc. They also have different traditional dresses.
The first thing we have to do is tolerate the cultural differences. Tolerance means we accept the differences to make a harmonious society. Can you imagine how would it be if every culture was the same? I think we would easily get bored and stressed. Imagine if we went to other cities or countries, and they also had the same culture with us, it would be pointless. We would rather just stay at home and we would not get to broaden our horizons about the world.
After we are able to tolerate the cultural differences, the next thing we have to do is understand it. It may not be an easy thing to do, because all of us have egoism in ourselves. We have to place our egoism in the right place as we know that it is also still needed in certain conditions, such as when it is related to our dignity, truth, and honesty. We have to defend these things and in this case we need to do things which are sometimes considered selfish. The act of embracing and tolerating other cultures must be started from ourselves, and it will be copied by other people.
But there is one thing which can lead to two opposite things; positive and negative: primordialism. On one side, it can conserve our cultures according to its definition. Primordialism is a view that holds certain things firmly which is brought since one was a child. However, on the other hand it can grow our ethnocentrism, an attitude in which someone judges another cultures merely by one’s own cultural views. In this case, we need to open our mind to these cultural differences. Try to think that these will broaden our horizons.
The important thing that we should know is that the cultural differences can unite us. It means we will be stronger if we are together. As Robert Alan once said “Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.”Not only that, they also make the world beautiful and we can broaden our horizons as we see the different cultures from other cities or countries. If we realize this, we will be able to understand the cultural differences.
Based on the definition of character building, which is to strengthen positive traits in one’s character, accepting and understanding cultural differences are both included. In order to be able to accept and understand the differences, we have to grow and develop our humanity. There are several ways to grow and develop our humanity, one of them is respecting these cultural differences. As John Hume once said “Difference is of the essence of humanity. Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict. The answer to difference is to respect it. Therein lies a most fundamental principle of peace: respect for diversity.”

Aristotle said that man was by nature a social animal which means we need to socialize with other people. By socializing with other people we will get to respect and understand them at once. If we do this, we will surely be able to accept and understand their cultures which are different from ours. These cultivate our humanity which is an important component in the process of character building. Without this, we will be uncivilized and there will be no peace in this world. Besides humanity, open-mindedness also grows in ourselves. Like it or not, recognize it or not, creating an open-minded character is very important. Because harmony and peace will only occur if one another understands the cultural differences. Like a flower garden, which consists of various kinds and colours of flowers will be more beautiful than the homogenous one.

Oh NO!!

Oh no, why do days run so slow? The middle test is still about 1 week later. I've bored with all of this. Exams on the weekend make me crazy. Tomorrow I'll have ethics and physics test. Do you know, physics is such a hell for me! I hate physics so much. I can't accept whatever my teachers explain about physics. I don't know why I don't like physics right now. While I love physics when I was in Junior High School. God, what should I do now? I need a spirit to learn physics. But, how can I get this? I am sure You'll give me that spirit.
Although I was hopeless in learning physics. I may be able to get good scores in some subjects, such as Maths, Chemistry, Civics, English etc. But no in physics, the only subject I hate the most! I'll try to do my best for the test tomorrow.
When I realize that I hate physics, I decide to continue my study on accounting / finance. It will never meet physics anymore. It just meets mathematics and theory of economics. I think it's much better than other majors. I hope this is the best major for me. God, please, if this is the best major for me, You'll lead me to the right place.

It Slowly Drives Me Crazy

Being a grade 12 students makes me crazy. Where I have to have extra lesson everyday. All my day is full of assignments and exams, even on the weekend, where it should be free I think. I hope this will end soon. I am really tired with all of this.
The middle test will be held on September 25th until October 8th 2013. And on the first day will be filled by English test. In this case, I can still be a bit relax for a while. Hope there are no more middle test for the other subjects. But I think I was wrong. Bcause there are some exams in this week (2nd week of middle test). Oh God.. please bless me.
Besides that, I still have to sell bazaar coupons. In this case, I ask my juniors to help me selling these coupons. So I just sell about 4 coupons maybe. It still remains about 2 coupons at the highest price (Rp 18.000,00). Do you think it's expensive?
Hmm, I just want to get out from all of this as soon as possible!
I know I must face the final exam on April 2014.
But I am sure that Jesus will always beside me.

All I need is You

I'm entering a strange zone in my life
And I think these are the hardest parts I’ve ever faced
Where I have to stand here alone by myself
Nobody knows what I am facing now

These are the coldest days of my life
Where I do not have any places to take shelter
Except You, my Lord
You always be there for me

Sometimes my tears fall
I just want to get out of this zone immediately
But I know, You are always here beside me
And never let me to be alone

I’m sure I can pass this zone
Because You help me when I'm in distress
When I fall down, You raise me up
Then I realize, all I need is You

Moonlight Sonata XVII

‘Sweet seventeen’, maybe we often hear these words. Everybody interprets them in different ways. Not a few people celebrate it by holding a big party. But it is fine. However, for me, what is most important is that I start a new stage in my life. A stage where I have to be more mature both in thought and action. Moreover, I must start to understand how to face the life, how to love the fellow human being, and how to build a relationship with God, fellow human being, and environment. And this starts from today, I will try to achieve this goal as my age increases. Therefore, from this moment onward I will choose a theme in each birthday of mine. Theme, I need it for aspiration guidance, self-control guidance, and my future life journey.

If I have to say, which was the most unforgettable birthday celebration for me? I will say my fourth birthday. Because my birthday was celebrated at one of the hospitals in Jakarta. Yes, at that time I was being treated in the hospital because I had typhoid illness. I still remember very well, the wheelchair I used was decorated with balloons. The doctors, nurses, my parents, my parents’ family who is in Jakarta sang “Happy Birthday”. This was very touching and unforgettable. The other lasting birthday was when I was five year old. I celebrated it at an orphanage in Bali. I tried to share my happiness to them and as well as my thanksgiving because I had recovered.

My seventeenth birthday theme is “Moonlight Sonata XVII”. Why did I choose it as my birthday theme? I think, almost everybody knows that Moonlight Sonata is a song which was composed by the German pianist, Ludwig Van Beethoven on 1802 which was dedicated to his seventeen-year-old pupil, Giulietta Guicciardi. He loved her very much. Unfortunately, their relationship was not approved by a Giulietta’s parents because their social status was different.

Beethoven made the sonata for a girl who he loved very much with all his heart. From here, we can learn how to love the fellow human being. Not only for our special ones, but also our parents, friends, and the universe, and even those who are hostile to us. We should love people sincerely, regardless of their social status, appearance, etc. As the Chilean poet, and literature Nobel laureate in 1971, Pablo Neruda said; “I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way.”

Actually, what is love? Maybe it is a bit hard to be answered. But for me, love is a sacred feeling which is possessed and comes from self-consciousness of each person to pursue true happiness. But, people often do not want to accept the risk that comes along with it. After they face the risk, it is not infrequent they protest if they do not get it. It is good for us to imitate Beethoven who sincerely loved Giulietta and he was ready to accept the risk of loving her.

Myself and My Future Aspiration

When asked, who are you? Everyone has their own answer. As for me, I will say I am a girl who loves music very much. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a doctor, but also a pianist. Why did I want to be a doctor? It was because I had a serious illness when I was 4 years old. I had typhus and there was liquid in my pericardium. I saw how the doctor helped me and gave me some medicine that gave me a ‘moon face’ (a medical term). The doctor was also very nice. She was very friendly and reassured me so that I would not be afraid. This experience inspired me. For this reason I want to help others by becoming a doctor. And why did I want to be a pianist? Both of them are so different. I wanted to be a pianist because I love playing piano since I was in kindergarten. Playing the piano makes me feel calm and I have a connection with my piano as if I can ‘talk’ to it.
Time flies so fast, I was in junior high school. There was also change in my mind, especially about my dreams. I started to be interested in business, this was because my parents and my extended family are businessmen and businesswomen. I saw how they gave others the opportunity to work. It is good because the rate of unemployment in Indonesia amounts to 7.24 million people in August 2012. And the climax of unemployment and poverty is criminality. Criminality will make the country paralyzed in every aspect, economically, socially, politically, culturally, etc.
I am currently studying in a public high school in Denpasar, Bali. I have a new idea. I want to be a doctor and I want to build a hospital. Because I love playing piano, I want to specialize in music therapy. It has shown its effectiveness in treating symptoms of many disorders, including Amnesia, Alzheimer, Parkinson’s disease, etc. I think Indonesia should develop music therapy because there are many functions of music therapy besides curing symptoms of some disorders, for example, it can help improve our intelligence. The effect of music therapy which can improve our intelligence is called ‘Mozart effect’. Based on scientific research by Franches Rauscher et al from University of California, after 36 students listened to Sonata K.448  by Mozart for 10 minutes, they scored 8 to 9 higher on the spatial IQ subtest Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales than after they listened to relaxation instructions or do not listen anything at all. This activity lasts only 10 to 15 minutes. Besides that, it can also improve our memory. This can happen because the part of the brain that processes music is located adjacent to the memory. So when a person trains the brain with music therapy, he is also automatically training his memory.
My hospital in the future will be different from other hospitals. I want to build an international hospital. So other countries can admit the existence of the hospital. I wish it can be the first international hospital with free service for paupers. Then other countries can adopt the same model and foreigners can trust the hospital too. The hospital will be a hospital with the best quality and serves its patients with love. The profit will be obtained from the pharmacy and other facilities. I will also find donors who want to help fund the special free service for paupers provided by my hospital. I want to make people realize that there are still many people who needs our help. I am inspired by Mother Teresa. She cared for paupers before caring for herself. She cared all for paupers with great love. She once said “Work without love is slavery.”
As Aristotle said “Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god.” We need one another. So, to build the hospital I will need a pharmacist, a psychologist, nurses, internists, pediatricians, etc. The hospital cannot run without them. But I have to be able to manage it. I have to make all staffs feel comfortable and they must be loyal to their duty. I also have to ask them to serve the patients with great love and care. So, the patients will feel comfortable and loved by the people who want to sincerely help them.
